Patient History

58 year old woman presented with chronic pain of the shoulder without history of traumatism.

MR Technique

1.5T MR450, 8 Ch HD shoulder array coil

  • 3-plane localizer + calibration (for Pure)
  • Coronal-oblique, axial-oblique, sagittal-oblique 2D FSE, PD fat sat, 3:39
  • PROPELLER 3.0, same scan planes, PD fat sat, 2:49
  • Sagittal-oblique, 2D FSE, T1 W, 1:26

PROPELLER 3.0 now replaces 2D FSE in all 3 planes on all our shoulder exams.

MR Findings
(a) Coronal oblique MR image without PROPELLER 3.0: The significance of the increased signal
intensity of the supraspinatous tendon is questionable (white arrow).
(b) Coronal oblique MR image with PROPELLER 3.0 reveals increased signal intensity in the distal
part of the supraspinatus tendon (white arrow) with overlying intact tendinous fiber (red arrow).
After 3 months using PROPELLER 3.0 for shoulder exams, and 180 successful patient studies, we
now use PROPELLER 3.0 systematically, no longer scanning the conventional 2D FSE, except for
the sagittal T1w images.
